84 Charing Cross Road (2014)
It all began with a letter inquiring about second-hand books, written by Helene Hanff in New York, and posted to a bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road in London. As Helene's sarcastic and witty letters are responded to by the stodgy and proper Frank Doel of Marks & Co., a relationship blossoms into a warm and charming long-distance friendship lasting many years. The correspondence spanned two decades – from Britain’s post-war austerity to the height of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ – and was full of warmth, humour and humanity. The simplicity of this true story of the love affair between Miss Helene Hanff of New York and Messrs Marks & Co., sellers of rare and second-hand books, at 84 Charing Cross Road, London, has touched the hearts of thousands.
